CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Cassandra
Age: 23
Canon: Tangled: The Series
Canon Point: End of Season one
Character Information: Cass's entry on the Disney Wiki
Personality: Growing up in an orphanage before being adopted at a young age by the captain of the Corona guards, Cassandra was taught to focus on the "here and now," to earn responsibility, and that hard work is what's required to get where you want to be in life. These lessons stuck by Cassandra, and she now lives by them.
As a handmaiden, Cassandra performs her duties well, but her personality just doesn't fit into the mold. She's rough around the edges, and a bit of a tomboy with no interest in girlish things. Cassandra collects weaponry in her spare time, having an entire collection in a wardrobe in her room, and loves a good prank every now and then. If the time comes where something makes her angry, Cassandra expresses it loud and clear with potential shouting matches and physical threats. But, besides that, she tends to keep her emotions closed off towards others, preferring her privacy. She has no time for dreams, and no time for love. Right now, most importantly, she needs to be serious and get things done if she ever wants to reach her goals.
Growing up in the royal palace from a very young age, watching the guards and learning their protocols, it's no surprise that Cassandra's life ambition is to be a guard like her father. And Cassandra herself feels more than ready for the task. She boasts a fighting spirit, ready and sometimes happy to leap into the fray of a fight and show off her skills when it comes to swords, bows, spears, and a number of other weapons. A mixture of cunning and bravery lets Cass stand up to foes much larger than her, and regularly scoff at their chances. She's highly proud of her abilities, proud enough and sure enough that sometimes she does end up leaping into fights she ends up overwhelmed in, but that just leaves her too determined to give up anyway.
....But, because it's her father she's trying to impress, she finds her requests to take part in guard duties constantly rebuffed. Not to be deterred, Cassandra simply trains on her own, in secret, to be a guard. Although, not without focusing on her work as a handmaiden too. Cassandra hates the job, and finds the constant work for festivals and such frustrating and boring, but she'd never let herself do anything halfway. It's a life of washing linens and mending dresses with just enough time to finish a new map of Corona's secret passageways that she uses to sneak out under her father's nose and train outside the castle. It's probably this that lets Cassandra understand and sympathize with Rapunzel's plight at the start of the series. Not being respected and needing her own space are two thing she knows very well, it's why she offers to sneak Rapunzel outside the castle grounds for some fun. And it's why she brings Rapunzel to the spot where the Sun Flower was growing to show her the mysterious, black rocks that sprouted there... and it's Cassandra's fun idea that causes Rapunzel's hair to grow back and set things in motion that can't be stopped.
Predictably, being raised by such a staunch man of the law rubbed off on Cassandra. She holds a deep respect for justice, and importantly, a distaste for thieves, thugs, and anyone who would take the easy way to get what they want, or show disrespect for those who work hard or their jobs. Over the series this puts her at odds with pub thugs, thieves, even Rapunzel at one point... but most especially, Eugene Fitzherbert.
When the former world-class thief rescued the lost princess, he was accepted into the castle with open arms, barely more than a flick on the wrist before he was living in the lap of luxury without needing to lift a finger. Beside's her father's hate of him, Cassandra didn't like Eugene for these reasons from the start, seeing him as nothing more than an egotistical, freeloading, know-it-all. And, due to both of them being so close to Rapunzel most of the time, she would frequently start arguments with him over anything, ranging from something he's done, like taking her halberd without asking, to shave with. Or, just about anything else is viable to earn a snarky comment.
But with Rapunzel, things are different. As her lady-in-waiting, she dutifully serves her, helping with day-to-day princess tasks, even teaching her more about how it is to be a royal. And, in return, Cassandra found someone who genuinely likes her. From a mostly friendless background before, having a best friend like "Raps" was the thing Cass needed to experience some important growth. Even if she might still roll her eyes at the more schmaltzy things Rapunzel is known for, her friendship is one of Cassandra's most valued things, and managed to give Cass the idea that making friends and opening up to others (or at least acting less antagonistic) isn't that bad. It's this bond with Rapunzel that helps her set aside differences with Eugene, typically when Raps is in peril, but eventually for good.
Whether it's because of how hard she's worked all her life, or just her personality, Cassandra faces life with a blunt, realistic outlook that usually contrasts with Rapunzel's optimism and generosity. She has a trained owl for a scout, and friend, who's named.... Owl. She prides herself on being no-nonsense and able to tell it like it is, speaking honestly to the point of potentially coming across as hurtful. Which isn't always the intention, but she'll gladly trash talk someone who really deserves it, (or is Eugene).
Of course, despite all of her honesty, she is not adverse to keeping secrets. Knowing that she's responsible for sneaking Rapunzel outside the kingdom, against the King's orders, she immediately panics at the thought of anyone else discovering it. And later still, she pleads with Rapunzel for her to keep her secrets from Eugene. While not in a malicious way, but Cassandra is fully right to fear being found out, and being punished for it. Her entire life, everything she's worked for, would be instantly destroyed, and she could be shipped away to a convent... something that does happen when the king learns of it.
And despite trust being something she relies on, Cassandra struggles early on with the trust others place on her, especially as they get in the way of her finally earning the respect she's searching for. Early on, Cassandra entered the Challenge of the Brave, a contest to prove the toughest person in Corona, with Cassandra entering on her own in the hopes of gaining more respect and recognition as someone who isn't just the unassuming handmaid of a princess. But as Rapunzel shows interest, she quickly tries to prevent her from entering, and when that fails, she struggles between her friendship and being more than what people see her as... which nearly ends in a fight between them. Later on, when her new friend, Varian promises to help her finish her maid duties for a science expo so she can have the chance to perform guard duty, she gladly accepts, along with the promise that she'd be his assistant for his presentation. But when she finds herself in a perfect opportunity that would prevent her from fulfilling her promise, she ends up struggling with that as well. Both times, Cassandra does end up recognizing what's important; she saves Rapunzel, and though she lost the challenge, she knows how Rapunzel feels for her is enough, and she also ends up siding with Varian, and becomes his assistant to save everyone when his experiment goes haywire.
At the end of it all, Cassandra is just a tough girl trying to get some respect, and needs to open up a little more. But, she's ready as she'll ever be.
